FORMER Warrington Wolves forward Matty Nicholson will have to wait to make his NRL debut.

The second-rower has travelled to Las Vegas with new club Canberra Raiders, who face New Zealand Warriors in their Round One fixture immediately after his old teammates face Wigan Warriors at Allegiant Stadium.

While he has been part of preparations, however, he will not take the field having been left out of head coach Ricky Stuart’s named 22-player squad for the game.

Nicholson was lured away to the NRL after two-and-a-half impressive seasons at The Halliwell Jones Stadium having joined from Wigan midway through the 2022 season.

After scoring two tries on his Wire debut against Catalans Dragons at Magic Weekend 2022, the 21-year-old went on to make 51 appearances for the club, scoring 17 tries.

He joined Canberra on a three-year deal ahead of this season and started both of his side’s NRL Pre-Season Challenge matches – a victory over Penrith Panthers and a defeat to Cronulla Sharks.

However, his competitive debut for the Green Machine will have to wait, with Hudson Young and Zac Hosking their starting back-rowers.
